Household Pest #863219

Asked April 03, 2024, 10:49 AM EDT

I have been noticing these dried worm like things in my house. They are primarily in the bedroom. The one attached was in my bed. This is about 2 inches. All are dead and dried out.

Expert Response

I can't make out what this is from the photo. Worms inside a home would be unusual and could be a sign of moisture coming from somewhere such as a leak. I'd recommend looking in closets and other spaces to confirm there is no unexpected moisture buildup.

Is it possible that these could have been brought indoors accidentally from an item that was recently moved to that room?

I recently moved and bought a mattress.  I'm not sure if that product contained the pest.  Do you have any recommendations on who I can take it to to have them confirm that it is not dangerous?

I accept insect samples for identification at the Macomb Extension office on Mondays/Tuesdays:
21885 Dunham Rd, Ste 12
Clinton Twp, MI 48036
Use Entrance E. There is a $7 charge for samples. The office number is<personal data hidden>.

The MSU plant and pest diagnostic lab (pestid.msu.edu) also accepts insect samples for identification. You'll want to contact them for information on pricing.
