managing residential backyard cottonwoods #862843

We planted a few cottonless cottonwood trees 21 years ago in our suburban yard and they have grown a lot. We've since cut down one that got too big for its area. Another is a beautiful backyard tree that loses limbs occasionally. We know that cottonwoods continue to get large and can drop large limbs sporadically. Is there a publication or other advice for homeowners to manage residential cottonwoods? Should we get it trimmed professionally so it won't drop limbs on our neighbor's house or get too large? thank you!

Hi Lisa!
Thanks for your question. Yes, we suggest contacting a certified arborist to have your trees assessed and trimmed. Since Cottonwoods grow so fast, small limb breakage is very common but an arborist will be able to prevent large breakage. Cottonwoods can live up to or over 100 years, so with proper management, you should be able to keep them for years to come.

thank you so much! I'll next talk to our city Forester for advice on choosing an arborist to come look at the tree.
Iappreciate your thoughts on this topic.
Best wishes, Lisa
