Expert Response

Hi Louise,

Hosta need regular moisture in well-drained, fertile soil. You can amend the soil by adding one part compost to two parts native soil.  Plant in a location that has preferably morning sun but with shade in the hottest part of the afternoon.  Some cultivars will tolerate more more sun than other.  Plant when the ground is not frozen.  Of note, hostas are not deer resistant!

Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

Thanks,

Lisa
