This year we found this at the base of the weeping cherry tree, some of the branches also look like they have been injured. Wondering what is the cause and if anything can be done? This is a memorial tree, on the grounds of a funeral home. The tree was planted in 2020. I spoke with the nursery that I bought it from, they said it was a beetle.

Expert Response
This looks like an old injury around the base of the trunk. Possible reasons for the injury may be mechanical damage from lawn mowers or weed whackers, planting too deeply, excessive mulch, etc. This does not look like a disease or insect issue.
