Local Study on Pressure Treated Lumber #862753

Asked March 28, 2024, 4:16 PM EDT

Has there been a local study similar to the Oregon University Extension one regarding PT lumber use in raised garden beds? Their study is here: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/soil-compost/pressure-treated-wood-raised-bed-construction-willamette-valley I'd be interested in similar results for Micronized Copper treatments, more commonly found on the east coast.

Expert Response

Although we are not aware of local research as of yet on MCA-treated lumber, information on the National Pesticide Information Center web page about wood preservatives indicates that micronized copper treatments release less copper than copper azole treatments. Given the low impact OSU's study found thus far on the soil and vegetable plants in beds using copper azole boards, we surmise that the risk is even lower when using MCA lumber. We have more resources you can explore, if interested, on our The Safety of Materials Used for Building Raised Beds page.
