Stubby carrots #862731

Asked March 28, 2024, 1:41 PM EDT

Hello,

We live in Loveland. The last two years, our carrots have come out stubby. We turn over the soil in our garden beds every spring. What do we need to supplement the soil with so that our carrots can grow longer?

Thank you so much!

Expert Response

Hi Gina,

Carrots are hard to grow - especially ones that are long in size. In our soils they often end up misshapen. I would suggest that you grow carrots that are shorter varieties (less than 6" long - they are called "short" or "half-long"). Here are a few to consider - and check seed catalogs or local garden centers for additional options:
  • Nantes ('Scarlet' or try 'Little Finger' for a shorter one!)
  • Chantenay ('Red Core', 'Shin Kuroda'
  • Short n' Sweet
  • Caracas hybrid
  • Danvers 126
  • Atlas (like a golfball!)
  • Gold Nugget (yellow)
  • Thumbelina (really small, really cute)
Also, if you haven't tried it, consider seed tape - the seed of the carrots is embedded in the papery tape. You plant the entire tape and the paper dissolves. It also allows for perfect spacing of the carrots, so no thinning is needed.
