Expert Response

Perennials like bulbs shouldn't need routine fertilization, so unless a laboratory soil test reveals a particular nutrient deficiency, you don't need to apply any fertilizer. (Adding nutrients if there are already plenty in the soil won't help the plant at all and can contribute to stormwater runoff pollution that impacts the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Similarly, the soil acidity - pH - needs to be in the right range for nutrients to be available to roots. This range varies from one plant species to another.) If you decide to do a soil test, we can help to interpret the results if desired.
