Planning a student maintained 20X20 edible garden #862632

Asked March 27, 2024, 11:54 AM EDT

We are planning a project where students will plan, plant, harvest and manage a 20X20 garden. We are looking for resources on what we need to obtain for example how much dirt, seeds, layout ideas etc. are needed. We are looking at mound planting for the majority of the area with one or two 2x4 raised beds. We are creating a budget for getting this project started and not sure where to begin on all of the needed resources and in what quantities. Thank you for any direction.

Your students will enjoy this project, I am sure.  It will be important to choose your site, determining sun exposure and drainage of the area as well as ease of access.  The links below offer detailed discussion of most of the planning factors.

The best advice I can give you is to contact your Franklin County office of The OSU Extension Service, at:
Kunz-Brundige Franklin County Extension Building
2548 Carmack Road
Columbus, Ohio 43210
Phone:<personal data hidden>

Their staff can offer help with soil testing, and referrals to local sources for plants and seeds, and their Master Gardener Volunteer group is very active in educational presentations and other kinds of assistance for projects like yours.

Thank you for your question.  We wish you success.
