I want to plant pansies and ranunculus this sporing. How hardy are they and what temps do I need to be careful of? Thank you.

Expert Response

Aren't we ALL so eager for spring and beautiful blooms! You do not say where you are writing from but here in Cuyahoga County, Pansies are not a problem and a welcome spring grower because they can tolerate cold weather, about a month before your average frost-free date. Here is an excellent article: https://extension.psu.edu/extend-the-season-with-resilient-pansies. While we are NOT supposed to give information that does not come from .edu, .gove., or .org, I will add a small caution from personal experience: deer can be a problem; they come up to my front step to dine on them so take that into account.
As to the ranunculus, it was difficult to find appropriate information but here is some good information:
https://garden.org/learn/articles/view/757/Prolific-and-Terrific-Ranunculus/. They are tender bulbs and will not winter over in the garden.
I am sorry to rain on your parade. Perhaps primroses will please you. https://extension.psu.edu/pick-a-primrose-for-a-pop-of-perfection
