Lilac Spacing #862593

Asked March 26, 2024, 8:10 PM EDT

Hello! I'd like to plant a lilac alongside my raised garden, the sunniest spot in the yard. My garden is a wooden box resting on the ground, nothing underground. How much space should there be between the side of the garden box and the lilac? I'd love to know that distance for both a dwarf lilac variety as well as a larger variety, if possible. Thanks so very much!

Hi Sydney,

There's no easy answer for your question; it depends what kind of lilac you get. See this:

When you find a type you like, check the label for directions or look the variety up online for guidance.

The most important thing about planting a lilac is to give it full sun. That's how you get the best flowers. Also, if you ever prune the plant do so immediately after the flowers fade. If you cut it back in spring or fall you'll cut off the flower buds.

Hope this helps!
