Grass Identification #862568

Asked March 26, 2024, 4:53 PM EDT

I live in North Potomac, MD. This grass has been spreading in my front yard mostly near driveway. Can you help me identify it and advise on how to eliminate it?

Expert Response

Hi,

It is difficult to tell in this state. We would need for it to green up more and see the roots and potentially seedheads, even then grass ID can be very difficult. It could be Bermuda/Wiregrass or Nimblewill. Since it is brown right now that tells us its a warm season grass. Since you are in Montgomery county you will need to refer to your turf grass pesticide laws for treatment options.

If there are just these small patches, it may be best to dig it out right now and core aerate and overseed with a high quality grass seed this fall. You can put a little grass seed in the bare spots now so other weed seeds don't move in, but the fall is the best time to overseed. It will help increase the desired turf grass to outcompete the weed grass that is occurring. Also making sure the pH level (acidity level) is appropriate and the soil isn't lacking in nutrients will benefit the turf grass growth (soil test). Overall from your photo it looks like the turf is fairly happy so it may just need to be aerated and overseeded in the fall to help with compaction.
