Expert Response

Hi,

Sedge ID can be very difficult. Maryland Biodiversity Project is listing over 150 species documented in Maryland and since it is a volunteer we won't be able to tell which one it is. So many of them look very similar. You can use the link to compare photos with what you have to see if you can narrow it down.

You could also compare photos in the Mt. Cuba Center report on different Carex that grow well in our region. Some listed in there are different cultivars and while it could be one of those , it is unlikely. Check the White tinge Sedge on page 13.

Let us know if you have additional questions.

Emily

ok, thanks.
Any wild guesses?

If it is a dry area I'm leaning towards the White-tinged or Carex albicans since it seems to be pretty wide spread through the state. Here are some close up photos of the seed heads from iNaturalist to compare in person https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/127327-Carex-albicans

Also check Carex pensylvanica - I don't think it is this because it looks more clump forming than spreading with runners.
