Apple Trees #862525

Asked March 26, 2024, 10:22 AM EDT

Hello, I would like to have an apple tree in my smaller St. Paul yard. I have read that you need to have 2 trees for pollination. It seems a dwarf variety would be best for my yard size. I’m curious what variety of apple tree would be best and how much space I would need for each. I also want to consider how big the root system would get and if it would interfere with any lines running to my house. I’m also curious where is a good place to purchase the trees you recommend. Also, any tips for planting and aftercare would be appreciated. One other question I have is that I’m going to plant my steep front yard in natives. Would I need to rip the grass out first or can I plant in the grass and hope the plants will take over? Also, what are some good native plants for a steep hill? Thank you so much! Sarah

Hi, Sarah.  I have a bunch of resources for you to consider your choices.

As for trees, you're right that dwarf-stock is likely the best size for your yard.   There does need to be a second apple tree to cross-pollinate, but a crabapple would do as well.  Sargent Crab is a nice small variety with interesting horizontal branching.

Great idea for natives on that steep front yard.  They'll hold the slope nicely with the longer roots.  You will need to remove the grass first.

One thing to consider that is less maintenance would be Diervilla, which is a native bee-friendly small shrub.  Gro-Low Sumac would be another nice option.   Here are some other resources to get you started:
