In the UM agriculture site it is recommended to side dress garlic with a high Nitrogen fertilizer. At what percent do you recommended the N content? Would it be better to use synthetic or organic? The garlic was planted in September and looks very good looking forward to Summer harvest. Thank you.

Hi-
The commercial recommendations are for 25 lbs. of N/acre to be applied late March and again in early May.
25 lbs./acre is equivalent to approximately 1 ounce of N/100 sq. ft. of garden area. You could accomplish this with 6.5 oz. of nitrate of soda (15-0-0), Either synthetic or organic fertilizers are fine to use. Synthetic fertilizers tend to release nutrients more quickly.
If your soil is relatively high in organic matter (>5%) you can reduce the amount of fertilizer applied.
Please see our Growing Garlic page and Fertilizing Vegetables page. Consider covering your patch with row cover material to prevent feeding injury from allium leafminer.
