Clover lawn #862414

Asked March 24, 2024, 8:10 PM EDT

Hello, I would like to transition to a clover lawn. Which type of clover should I use and do you have a recommended brand or company to purchase. When should I begin planting? Thanks so much!

Expert Response

Hi,

Did you mean a mixed clover lawn with turf grass? Clover isn't native to North America and while you do see some bees on the flowers, pollinators don't widely benefit from it. Different clovers have been naturalized here though as they used to be part of grass seed mix and are now common and widespread.

A 100% clover lawn is not recommended for various reasons. You can see the disadvantages on our Lawns and Microclover page. Mixing with turf grass though is more sustainable and a feasible option to limit the maintenance of turf in our mid-Atlantic growing zone.

The publication linked at the bottom of that page goes into more detail about how to plant microclover with turfgrass.

Let us know if you have further questions with this.
