Crepe Myrtle #862387

Asked March 24, 2024, 2:14 PM EDT

Dear UMD Extension, I noticed that our crepe myrtle has developed bumps along one of the main trunks. Could you please let me know what this might be and if I should be concerned? I took this photo today, March 24, 2024. Thank you!

Expert Response

It looks like it could be callous tissue from any old injury perhaps? It doesn't look like a pest or disease. Could a deer have rubbed antlers on the bark a few years ago? An injury from a landscaper who was trimming the tree?

We can't see it clearly enough to be sure. You can try to take a photo holding a piece of paper or cardboard behind the trunk to reduce any back lighting.
