Bee identification #862385

Asked March 24, 2024, 2:01 PM EDT

I am not sure what type of bee this is. I have a pond, and these bees appeared this past week and are swarming around near roots at the edge of my small pond. Are these bees that are "good" or are they wasps I need to be concerned about? We have two dogs and the bees don't seem to be concerned with them when they go near the nest. They are hard to see in the photos because they blend in with the roots, but if you zoom in, you can get a good view of them. Thank you for any info you can provide.

Expert Response

Hi,

These appear to be regular honey bees, and are not harmful. They can travel in a swarm but usually if their nest isn't being harmed they will ignore pets and humans. They are most likely getting a drink which is normal.

Do you have a photo of the nest/hive? If the dogs aren't bothered by it it probably doesn't need to be removed. If you feel like the nest is in a bad location, we can direct you to a bee keeper who can remove and relocate the hive.
