Blue Spruce Thinning #862315

Asked March 23, 2024, 12:32 PM EDT

My blue spruce has been thinning over the years. Although it shows new growth each year, growth in the interior has been progressively thinning over the last several years. The tree was treated in 2016 and 2017 for needle cast.

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

Unfortunately, we see this needle cast disease frequently in Delaware. See this fact sheet for management options: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rhizosphaera-needle-cast It may be necessary to treat for this disease annually in the spring.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.  Are you diagnosing the current thinning as due to the previous needle cast disease?  The tree was treated 2-3 years in a row (spring application) previously.  Does it appear that the needle cast is back, or is this residual damage?  Do you recommend having the tree treated for needle cast again this spring?

Thank you,

Heather

Unfortunately, this is one if the diseases that may need to be treated for annually. If the last time this was treated in 2017 or 2018, then it's a good idea to treat again. The dead needles on the ground and infected needles still attached to branches contain the fungal spores that reinfect healthy needles in the spring. You can also mulch under the tree, prune out infected branches, and other cultural practices outlined here, to prevent reinfection: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/rhizosphaera-needle-cast
