2024 Crabgrass Prevention Schedule #861176

Asked March 11, 2024, 8:04 PM EDT

Given our short and warmer than usual winter with little snow cover, and the early warmer spring when is the best time to start the crabgrass battle? In 2022 I top-dressed my lawn which resulted in a large amount of crabgrass in 2023. I treated with Tenacity (Mesotrione) which took care of much of the problem. Then in the fall I aerated and seeded. This year I plan on applying pre-emergent Prodiamine (Barracade) and then a pre and post emergent Dimension or Scotts Halt several weeks later. So my question is, what would be the schedule for this year ? Thank you very much.

Thanks for the question. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide when soil temperatures in your area approach 55 degrees F, which will most likely be much earlier this year. Here is a link to more information:  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/controlling-crabgrass-your-lawn

Post emergent herbicide should be applied after you see crab grass plants growing in your lawn.
