Woolly adelgid question #860886

Asked March 08, 2024, 11:09 AM EST

Hello - we have 8 or 10 mature Eastern hemlocks on our 3/4 acre lot in Livonia. I have been checking them regularly for signs of woolly adelgid and so far, I have not seen any signs of it. My question is, do you recommend preventitive application of a pesticide? Thank you

Wayne County Michigan

Expert Response

The only known case of Hemlock Wooly adelgid anywhere near Wayne County is at 1 site in Ann Arbor. Though there is a risk for hemlocks in SE MI, it is low.

Keep monitoring the trees regularly for any signs of abnormality. I don't think it's necessary to preventatively treat trees that are far from the most active outbreak in West Michigan. If you do spot any suspicious signs of the insect, reply to us and/or the DNR with photos.
