Slug identification needed #860663

Asked March 06, 2024, 9:51 AM EST

Hello, I have noticed that there are a lot of black colored slugs some small in size .5-1 inch to few that are 2in at the back yard. My dog keeps trying to smell them and I want to know what kind of slug it is and if it is dangerous for dog. If so, what can be done to reduce the slug population in the yard. Thank you!

Hi,

We aren't sure of the specific species of slugs since they can vary in color even in the species. It doesn't appear to directly match any of the slugs listed in Maryland Biodiversity Project website.

You can try to submit a photo to get identified on their iNaturalist account.

In terms of toxicity we would recommend you check with your vet. If they need a specific species to determine, if they are toxic, maybe just heir on the side of caution and don't let your dog eat them.

Eliminating slugs from your yard will be impossible but if you try to reduce their habitat that is probably the best you can do and also set traps for them. You may not want to use a bait poison in the instance your pet does ingest one and the poison is harmful to dogs. You could also bring in any product label to the vet to see if it would be harmful. The brand 'Sluggo' uses iron phosphate and is labeled for safe use around edible plants so it may be ok to use around pets. You can refer to our information page on slugs and snails for other tips.
