Tree Identification #860231

Asked March 01, 2024, 1:05 PM EST

Hello, I've noticed this pine tree for a few years, and I find it very unique. It's not a Larch as it is green year around and for the most part it is understory and in the shade. The folks at the help desk at the Arboretum recommended I contact you all. Attached are some pictures. Do you have any idea what kind of tree this is and where I could buy this particular tree?

Expert Response

Hi Dan,

To make a sure ID we need closeup photos of a branch, needles and the bark.

My best guess from these photos is that this is a struggling concolor fir. If it’s growing in shade, as it appears to be, that could explain the thin canopy. The light gray bark fits concolor fir, and this tree has the characteristic sagging lower branches and higher branches that reach upward.

See this page and the links it contains:

We can’t suggest retailers, but you’ll find this tree widely available by April and May. It’s a great alternative to blue spruce, which has many disease problems and tends to be short-lived here. It should be planted in full sun.

I hope this helps. If you can get closer pictures, please add them here and I can take another look. Thanks!
