I had a beautiful lawn last year...now all the grass is gone and it's just mud. What caused this, some type of fungus or is some type of insect eating it? There are little tiny holes all over the lawn.

How tiny are the holes? There are several animals that dig in lawns causing small holes, like skunks, ground squirrels and voles.
