Pruning apple tree #859318

Asked February 17, 2024, 12:49 PM EST

Hello, I planted a bare root Golden Delicious last spring and it really took off with over two ft of growth on top. A vertical branch also came off the bottom that is very thick. Is it better to try and make it a 45 deg angle with weights or a separator or prune it off? It pains me to potentially prune it but I’ve read through all of the documents posted but haven’t seen an example of this. There is a nice central leader. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
