is it too late to clean out my mason bee tubes and cocoons? #859208
Asked February 15, 2024, 2:03 PM EST
Hello!
Life has been busy and I have yet to take my mason bee cocoons out of the tubes and clean them. It’s February 15 and I live in Portland next to the Beaverton border. Elevation 500’. Is it too late to clean them? When should I plan on putting them out?
Thank you!

Expert Response
Hi Brianne,
It is getting pretty late and if you bring the cocoons in to clean at this point, the bees will likely start emerging. As you likely know, this is best done in October, after the bees have fully completed their development. After cleaning in October, the cleaned cocoons can also be placed in the fridge to reduce the bee's consumption of fat reserves.
The linked calendar by Linn County Master Gardeners is an excellent guide to when to put cocoons out.

Thank you. Would it make a difference if I cleaned them outside tomorrow when it's still cold? Or just wait to put the tubes out when it gets warmer at this point?
Brianne
Thanks, Brianne,
Doing the cleaning in the cold will help. You may want to insect the cocoons with a hand lens before cleaning them - if there are not a lot of pollen mites on the cocoon surface, I might just avoid cleaning them this year. If they are loaded with mites, might be worth doing a late cleaning.
