Grubs invading yard #858922

Asked February 11, 2024, 10:20 AM EST

Hi - Could you please help identify this type of grub? We have them on top of our grass and under the lawn as well. They’re attracting birds, voles, and our dogs. Hopefully with identification, we can figure out how to get rid of them. Thank you in advance.

Expert Response

Hello,

Based on what I see in your single image this might be some sort of cutworm.
I highly recommend you get a positive identification from MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostics

You should send additional images to help in the identification.
1 – flip the object over so they can view the underside and legs.
2 – place a penny next to object – to get an idea of the size.

Samples may be dropped off or mailed to MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostics. Please avoid shipping samples on Fridays as packages are not delivered to campus on weekends. When submitting plant samples, we encourage clients to email digital images to accompany the physical samples.

Email the images first and then send the sample if MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostics needs a sample.

Effective September 1st, the entomologist, Howard Russell, has retired. During the transition period to our new entomology diagnostician please send all insect/arthropod related images to <personal data hidden>.
