Is this a wasp? #858809

Asked February 09, 2024, 11:10 AM EST

I found this insect in the window screen of my garage. It is the biggest one I have ever seen. Is it a wasp? Or a yellowjacket?

Expert Response

Hello Jim,
It appears to be a wasp or cicada killer. Seeing the size and the details as seen from the front, and the top of the back, can help ID it if it is not too damaged.
Try photographing its back, perhaps taking a long pin and pinning it in place first. Also include a ruler or a coin in the picture so we can judge size.
