Looking for help to begin landscaping a new build on our family farm #857747

Asked January 24, 2024, 7:45 AM EST

Hello, my wife and I are building a home on our family farm west of Wooster. We are building in the middle of a 65 acre cornfield, parceled off into about 10 acres with plans to landscape 3 acres. We are hoping to link up with someone who can advise us on this blank slate! We are about a mile from the Mellinger Farm and frequently visit the Secrest Arboretum for inspiration. Any help is appreciated!

Expert Response

Hello!
I apologize for the delayed response.
Your question is quite challenging as landscape design is not a simple subject.
Checking out professional landscape companies in your area is one option.
But since you live near Wooster, here's an idea worth exploring.
The Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster offers Landscape Design course work.  It may be worthwhile to contact them to see if perhaps one of their grad students could be of help to you.  You might even be able to create a collaboration for an on-site class experience, mutually benefitting you and the students.
I realize this might be a long-shot, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!
The link below may help you with info and connections.

I truly hope this helps!  As I said, the only other option that I can think of is a private professional landscape company in your area.
Best Wishes on this huge project!

Hi Matt
I am thrilled that I was able to be of help!
Last night, I thought of this as well:  Wayne Co. Soil and Water District (as well as other counties) have a tree sale every year.  I looked it up and they are currently taking orders!  This is a really inexpensive option for getting new trees (very young ones) for your large landscape.  Here's the link:

If you decide to pursue this, I will advise that you have a way of protecting these saplings from deer, rabbit, etc.  And understand the need for watering when needed of course.

Again, hopeful this will be helpful for you!
