What are the best practices to control nsects that come out of decaying fruit on the ground and winter over in the ground?

Hi Michael and thanks for your question about insects over-wintering in your fruit on the ground. First, let me say that sanitation is the first line of defense in all fruit right now. Even berries that drop on the ground should be picked up and disposed of as possible insect homes. We pick up all our fallen apples and rake away the fallen leaves as soon as they are all down.

You can probably do this on Monday which is supposed to be dry if you haven't done it already. You can put them in your compost barrel to be taken away or burn or bury them, but just make sure you don't leave them in a place where they can hatch and return to your fruit.

After that, protecting your trees by organic, biological or chemical means next year will be important. I'll refer you to the Home Orchard Education Center in Clackamas County at the college. They have excellent classes on taking care of all kinds of fruit in both prevention and production areas.
