Hazelnut #856881

Asked January 02, 2024, 3:51 PM EST

Hi, I am having a difficult time finding a cold hardy variety of hazelnut shrub for LaPine that is not restricted here... I prefer a variety that is zone 4 or 5 and soil is sandy but i amend a considerable amount according to type ie. my berries and apple trees that are doing well. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank-you.

Expert Response

Hello John,
Thank you for your hazelnut question. Hazelnuts are sensitive to extreme cold and extreme hot, dry conditions, and therefore, not recommended in our Central Oregon climate.

Nik Wiman, Orchard Crop Specialist with Oregon State University, and the lead Extension Faculty for Hazelnuts, provided the following information:

“It is a very risky enterprise to grow European hazelnuts in your climate in eastern OR. The main problem is that pollination occurs in the winter. The Willamette Valley has an ideal climate as it is nice and mild during the pollination period (normally) to allow wind pollination in Dec-Feb. With European hazelnuts in your climate, in some years you may get nuts, others you may not, and you risk freeze damage annually.”

Following are OSU hazelnut resources that provide more information:

Thanks for responding. There is a canadian nursery that i get all of my berries from and they have zone 3 hazelnut bushes that people grow in central canada that i want to try but seems to be a restriction to this state for some reason. That's why i was asking for a cultivar that had the best chance.

Thank-you,
John
