Master Gardener Program #856603

Asked December 22, 2023, 3:09 PM EST

I am a teacher in the Cherry Creek School District and I am interested in becoming a Master Gardener. I am in the process of establishing a community garden for my school. Would the work that I do with the school count as my volunteer time?

Expert Response

Hi Lori,

Thank you for reaching out to Ask Extension about becoming a Master Gardener!

To answer your question about using your community garden at your school for your volunteer commitment as a Master Gardener... it depends.

Master Gardeners are educators first and foremost, so if you are teaching or educating, then you could use those hours towards a Master Gardener volunteer commitment.

You would not be able to count the time you are actively working in your community garden or building and creating the garden as MG volunteer hours though. This is because MG's don't provide services or "labor". Everything a MG does must be educational in nature.

If you are still interested in applying to become a Master Gardener, you can find out more here about the process.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions.
