Mosquito infestation in winter? #856483

Asked December 18, 2023, 1:17 PM EST

Can you identify the mosquito like insects that are swarming in my garage? I've attached some photos of ones that have been caught on fly paper. I think they come into the garage when the door is open. Will they go away when the temps get colder? Anything I can do to get rid of them?

Terry:

I cannot give you a positive ID but reading your description of the situation I think you likely have mostly Fungus Gnats on the fly paper.

The female fungus gnat can lay up to 200 eggs a week so the numbers can quickly increase.

It appears that their primary food is organic matter and fungi in the soil or planting medium.

They do not do any damage at this point. When we get some cold hard freezes that is at 28 degrees or less for several hours most of these annoying ‘flies’ will disappear.
