I sent your photos to one of our OSU hazelnut breeders, and he noted the following: it is difficult to identify hazelnuts from a single nut or photos alone. The trees look to be only a couple of years old and are most likely an OSU selection. The nut is definitely not a Yamhill, McDonald, PollyO or Wepster. Without any other clues, it fits the size and shape of Jefferson more than anything. An old husk and a photo of the catkins and buds would help.
