I place many agates at the base of this tree over the last couple of years. I believe a fungus grew and it is bright red. My question is, Is the color the color of the fungus or stained from minerals from the agates?
Is this harmful to the tree?
Thank you

Expert Response
The iron (red color) in agates isn’t very water soluble. The rocks and the fungus don’t have any effect on each other and the agates aren’t hurting the tree. The fungus however is a sign of rot. It would be wise to monitor the canopy for dead branches.
