Winter care of Whipcord Western Red Cedar #856126

Do Whipcord Western Red Cedar trees need to be wrapped (in burlap) for winter in upstate NY? Any other special care during this time of year?

Hello Carol,

Thank you for your question.  What an interesting plant!  I haven't come up with any special recommendations for winter protection for this form of Thuja plicata which is hardy to zone 5.  However if you reside in a frost pocket of zone 4 or you are on a windy hilltop some burlap staked up around the plant as a windbreak may be beneficial.  The foliage will bronze out in cold weather - this is normal.  It will green back up in the spring.  To check the zone where you reside please follow the link below:
