Oregon's Ash Trees and the beetle #854804

Asked November 06, 2023, 1:43 PM EST

Does anyone or any agency want to be notified if we see this happening? I live in Sweet Home above Ames Creek and I have noticed a few trees that have brown masses on the tops of some trees that I suspect are big Ash Trees.

Expert Response

Hello, this is interesting, but not really sure what it is.  Fall is a really difficult time of year to make assessments of tree health or impacts.  I think the best bet is to see what the tree does next spring.  Follow these same trees in the spring to determine if they leaf out ok, or whether the tops die.  If they die then this might be something Oregon Dept of Forestry would be interested in investigating.   But as I said, I think it would be best to follow these trees thru next spring to see whether they are unhealthy when they leaf out again.

thank you for the response and I have noticed how many ash trees are around and wondering about when they die. I will keep an eye out in springtime and let you know now that I know what to look for. Pamela Mitchell
