damaged Japanese maple #854541

Asked November 01, 2023, 3:35 PM EDT

We have a healthy bloodgood Japanese maple at the front of our house that was damaged when a nearby tree was removed. A large branch fell on the Japanese maple breaking off about half of the tree at a Y branch. Attached are a picture of the remaining part of the tree and a picture of where the break occurred. My question is: Would you expect this tree to recover on its own and grow eventually to be an attractive and healthy tree, or do you recommend replacing it? Thank you.

Expert Response

Wow, that is pretty severe.  The tree could probably survive, but could have significant decay develop over the next 5 - 10 years due the to wound and cracked wood.

The choice to replant or try to save it is a tough one.  But long term, you are probably best to replace it.  Unless you just like it, and want to give it five or ten years to see what happens, how it develops/responds.
