Basil plant #854410

Asked October 31, 2023, 1:28 AM EDT

I brought in a couple stalks of basil and put them in water. A substance that resembles pepper falls from the plant. Can you advise? Are they seeds? Thanks b

Expert Response

It's hard to tell what the objects are from the photo. It could be frass (insect droppings, like from a caterpillar or cricket) or seeds from the basil, if there are any spent flower spikes on the cuttings. If they crumble when pressed, it's probably frass; if hard and fairly round, they may be seeds.

Okay, I appreciate you getting back to me. We’re going to dry it.
