Asked October 29, 2023, 2:41 PM EDT

Hi all, are beautiful blue spruce tree has just started having yellow branches this year and then when we cut off  branch we saw the attached.  Also, looking inside the tree, there are no needles on branches and it is black. ugh!  We want to save this tree! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  It just started to snow here so not sure if we could start treatment now or wait till spring.  We are in Arvada and any advice for an arborist greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Kristen

Expert Response

Hi, Kristen: thanks for contacting the Jefferson county Extension plant diagnostic clinic.
It is not possible to determine the cause of your spruce tree's symptoms from these photographs. It would be best if you can bring some parts of the tree to the clinic - that branch in the photo with white material, 12-15 inches of a branch with yellow needles as shown in the photo, nd a similar sized branch you describe as black.
The plant diagnostic clinic is located in the fairgrounds, 15200 west 6th ave, Golden 80401, open 8-5 Tues through Friday.
Also, please send the photos directly to the plant clinic's e mail address: <personal data hidden>. (The Ask Extension platform does not make it easy to transfer photos to the plant clinic). It would be good to have another one or two photos of the entire tree, including the side not shown in the photos you attach here.
