Need Expert help with pruning and training Boxwood hedge #853907

Asked October 24, 2023, 12:34 PM EDT

Hi, I am assuming this isn't the correct forum for this kind of question but if you could point me to a better resource I will gladly follow up. I have a hedge of loose columnar boxwoods that I would like to have trimmed and trained to be as close to a formal hedge as possible. I know I don't have the skill or understanding to do this work. I'm afraid to call a lawn service as I expect they would just cut the top off the hedge and say thats good enough. I really want an expert that can trim and train these plants over a number of seasons to create a heathly and vigorous hedge that has a more formal shape. Can you point me to the right resource to find such a person? Respectfully, --

Expert Response

Hello John,

A first choice to trim and train your boxwood would be a certified arborist. They are a good resource for information on tree trimming and maintenance. These arborists have taken training in caring and passed certification tests in arboriculture, so they will recommend good arboricultural practices. Find certified arborists by searching under the “Find an arborist” tab, and using your zip code here. www.treesaregood.org.

Another possible organization to look for information on maintaining gardens professionally is the American Boxwood society. They have some publications specifically for pruning and maintenance of boxwoods. http://www.boxwoodsociety.org/
