Concerns for new apple tree #853289

Asked October 16, 2023, 9:22 PM EDT

We planted this bareroot Gala apple tree in early spring. It's not doing well. The bark is rusty red with scars. What's wrong? Is there anything I can do to help it going into winter? Thanks!

Expert Response

Apple tree bark, especially in young trees is naturally a reddish= brown, so what I see is not a problem with the color, but with the scars. One near the bottom of the tree looks very much like damage from a weed eating device that got too close to the tree. i also note that the tree seems to be in a depression with a lot of mulch. Too much water can damage trees, create root rots and inhibit growth. Did the tree leaf out in late spring? Were there any blossoms? Do you have a regular spray program set up (sulfur in fall; other sprays for next year's spring?) What are you using for fertilizer? These are all questions the answers of which may give us some more information You can also take a small clipping and your photos to the plant clinic at the Extension office(569 Hanley Rd. Central Point.) Please call before to learn current hours of operation,<personal data hidden>.
