what is eating my dahlia leaves #853029

Asked October 13, 2023, 12:03 PM EDT

I planted two dahlias this summer and they flowered beautifully. One plant in particular was bother by something eating the leaves all summer long. I searched for bugs, came out early in the morning and late at night. it seemed like with as much chewing damage that was done, that I would see some culprits. One time I found an earwig down in one flower and a few very small bugs that looked like flies. My zinnias also had lots of leaf chewing damage this summer, especially early on but they also bloomed well. This pest sleuthing is much harder than I thought. Any clues as to what did this and how I could see the pests if possible?

Hi Toni,

It looks like earwig damage to me. Not much likes to eat dahlias, but earwigs love them.

Control is difficult for me. My garden is a perfect environment for them (lots of decaying materials and places for them to hide). To discourage them, you need a tidy garden, less or no mulch, etc. That's not going to work for me, but you might consider that next year.

You can take down their numbers by going out at night and shaking them off the plant into a bucket of soapy water. They will run or drop off the plants when they see you coming, so you have to be quick. You can also place traps in your garden--some people use rolled up damp newspaper--so that they congregate in the trap during the day and then you dump them in the soapy water.  There are chemical controls you can use, including organic options, but any of these options will kill other invertebrates as well. You can do an internet search for earwig control and you will find products available in stores.

Earwigs are a serious pest. They will eat a wide variety of plants. I struggle with them in my own garden, so you have my sympathy.

Thank you Lindsey. This confirmed my suspicions. Not only do I have mulch and compost but I added a small fountain several years ago. Maybe that also attracts the earwigs. Perhaps I'll do without dahlias next year though the earwigs might also be eating leaves from zinnias. Chemical options are not my first choice so I'll try the newspaper traps. And maybe move the fountain. In any case this answer was helpful.
Thanks again.
