Hardy Hibiscus Control #852836

Asked October 11, 2023, 10:46 AM EDT

We love the big blooms on our hibiscus but the plants grow too tall in some beds. Is there any way to prune or otherwise control them without disturbing the flowering? Thanks, Cindy Sandine, OSU, 1967

Expert Response

Hello Cindy. This is Tom. I am a Master Gardener in Oklahoma County. I discussed your problem with my Horticulture Educator there.  Hardy hibiscus including Rose of Sharon can be pruned in late winter say late February or early March.  You can shape them to your wishes. Hibiscuses bloom on new wood so if you prune before new growth starts you should have plenty of blooms.
I want to invite you if you have more questions to email or call our Master Gardener Call Center at the OSU Oklahoma County Extension office at 2500 NE 63rd Street in OKC. Our phone number is<personal data hidden> and our email is <personal data hidden>.
