Newly Appearing Ant Hills #851860

Hello. I've noticed a bunch of ant (I guess they are ants) hills have appeared in the past few days under my old Leyland Cyprus trees. Hostas had been in the area. I don't recall seeing this many ant hills before. I now recall seeing a lone ant hill by my front walk a few weeks ago. Should I let them be or knock them down? If I should knock them down, any tips on how to best do that? I'm attaching some pics. The ants are light color, not black. I know insects are important, but I'm not sure about all these ant hills. Thanks.

Expert Response
These do look like ants and ant hills, but we can't determine what species they are from the photos. (There are over 100 ant species documented in MD.) They can be left alone since ants in the landscape are beneficial in many ways, helping to aerate the soil and preying on a variety of insects that gardeners would consider a pest or nuisance. They do not harm plants, and knocking down anthills would not affect the colony much or for very long since they will just rebuild the mound afterwards since it is the entrance to their underground nest.
