Oak Tree with a Broken Branch #851543

Asked September 28, 2023, 3:02 PM EDT

Hi, A week ago, a strong wind gust broke off a branch of our oak tree. Attached is a picture of the tree with the exposed bark. Do I need to have the exposed bark painted after a week, and since it is now fall? Thanks in advance for your help! Chou Eyberg

Expert Response

Thanks for the question.

I fear that there is nothing that can be done to save this tree. The damage is too severe. Moreover, the exposed center of the tree shows significant rot. That is probably why the branch broke off. Applying any type of paint or covering to a wound this large would not achieve anything. I would suggest that you obtain the services of a professional, licensed arborist to make an on-site assessment and inspection. See:
