Expert Response

Hi Ed,

Many varieties of milkweed are native to Ohio.  Their are many vendors of such seed and plants, including those listed in the linked website, with varieties:  https://www.growmilkweedplants.com/ohio.html.  We cannot recommend specific vendors.  As noted on the webpage, be sure not to buy plants treated with neonicotinoids or other pesticides which enter the plant tissue and poison monarchs.  For seeds, follow packet instructions.  If you have seeds from the wild, the linked article on stratification and growing milkweed seeds will be helpful:  https://www.saveourmonarchs.org/blog/its-time-to-start-cold-stratifying-your-milkweed-seeds.  Seeding can occur between October and June, but should not be completed during the summer months. Once the seed is broadcast, work the seed into the soil to a depth of 1/8th inch.  If planted in the spring, make sure it has been stratified.

Thank you for your question.
