possible invasive weed #851273

Asked September 26, 2023, 11:25 AM EDT

Dear Cooperative Extension, We've had a weed in our yard since autumn 2021, which I cannot identify. Please see pictures attached. Can you tell us if it's an invasive, or how to best control it? It seems to appear in early autumn, and can grow up to 5 feet tall. It's tall enough that it can choke out other plants if not checked. It doesn't really flower and goes from a pre-flower mass to a dandelion type head immediately, and spreads easily on the wind. It seems to grow best near ponds and swamps, and along the roadside. Fortunately, it doesn't have a deep root system like a dandelion, and is easily pulled. By pulling it immediately when spotted and bagging the entire plant, especially the seed head, we've been able to eliminate most of it. I pulled most of it this year already, but it seems to return. Thank you!

Dear Bard Fetler,

We think from from the photo it looks like it might be American burnweed (Erechtites hieraciifolius), also known as eastern burnweed, pilewort, and fireweed, is native to North America.

Here are two websites for you with some information.

You are correct, it appears to be American burnweed.

Do you know how common it is in Dutchess County?  It seems to be new to the Clinton / Rhinebeck area, and needs to be carefully controlled, as it is prolific and spreads easily.

Dear Bard Fetler

It seems to be very common for our area.
