Lawn #851171

Asked September 25, 2023, 1:14 PM EDT

Have a fairly healthy, irrigated, existing lawn on Pickerel Lake but would like to give it a boost. I plan on plugging it and running the slicer/seeder after. I would do it in the next few days but then leave for AZ for the winter so am planning on having someone remove leaves as they fall. Should I do the process now with the lawn continuing to grow and lots of mower action to remove leaves or should I wait until spring? Thank you

Good afternoon Brenda and thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.
Now is a fine time to plug your lawn, but to oversee it should have been done before the middle of September with the best time being mid August to mid September.  If you want to seed yet this fall you need to dormant seed, which means it needs to be colder and stay colder so the seed won’t germinate this year.  Spring would be a good time to over seed your lawn if you don’t want to do it this fall.

You can also aerate in the spring between March and May.  Then you could do both processes together.

I hope this helps!  Have a great winter!
