Strange bug #850915

Asked September 22, 2023, 2:22 PM EDT

What kind of bug is this on my fig tree?

Baltimore County Maryland

Expert Response

This is an adult Spotted Lanternfly [SLF], which is currently widespread in Maryland but particularly abundant in Baltimore county this year. Information about this invasive insect can be found on the linked page. It will not cause significant harm to the fig tree, but as an invasive species the Maryland Department of Agriculture does encourage gardeners to kill SLF when possible (though not by using insecticides) to help slow their spread.
