fungus on log #850723

Asked September 21, 2023, 6:49 AM EDT

I work at an early childhood center and we have large logs for students to climb and sit on. Naturally they will start to decompose, but some teachers were concerned with the fungus that was growing in it to make sure kids are ok to touch it. I have attached pictures. Thank you.

Expert Response

My first reaction was going to be- they are harmless, as long as they are not ingested. The truth is, however, anyone could have a sensitivity to various plants and fungi and have a skin reaction to touching one .  It would be best to reach out to the North American Mycology Association with this specific question.  https://namyco.org/  or https://msafungi.org/
